'KEN LEE' BY VALENTINA HASSAN

COMMENTS FOR VALENTINA HASSAN’S 'KEN LEE'

It is quite surprise when Mr.Shahrul said he will show us a video of a participant from Bulgarian Idol which I never saw it before. At first, we planned to watch Mukhsin, a film by Yasmin Ahmad, a talented and famous producer in Malaysia. The video is all about Valentina Hassan who participates in a singing competition in Bulgaria.

At first, I thought she sang Mariah Carey song in her own language, later I noticed that she tried to imitate Mariah Carey’s style in singing. She tried to imitate Mariah Carey’s pronunciation. It sounds weird and of course viewers hard to understand what she tried to deliver. Even I myself cannot comprehend her singing but after some time I got to know that she sing Mariah Carey’s song in English version not in Bulgarian version. She is so braved. She just goes for it. She does not care other people’s thought.

The judges themselves find hard to comprehend what Valentina try to deliver at first sight but then, they try to understand the songs that Valentina sang. They laugh quite loud but Valentina just ignores them. She really wants to be a singer. She impressed me when she chooses to sing an English song even though her English was not really good. But, with her passion in singing she tried to sing that song as good as she can do. Her spirit was superb. Despite people could not understand her pronunciation she still precedes with her singing.

At least she tried sing in English version not in Bulgarian version. That is her effort in conquering the song. She tries to imitate Mariah Carey’s pronunciation. Of course, it is a bit hard for not English native to pronounce well unless he or she went for some language course or attends language classes. I myself sometimes find hard to pronounce certain word. Valentine Hassan shows her effort in learning language using her own ability. Even though, she does not have higher educational achievement, she never gives up and fights to be in Bulgarian Idol’s list.

For some people who listen to it for the first time, they will laugh loudly because of her pronunciation. Valentine just like brings up new phenomena in Bulgaria. It is proved when she made another performance in that competition; she has many fans that support her. There are also some of them that imitate her style in singing. Valentina just like become an idol for them. Valentine might not very good in English because of her family background or educational background but she is good in entertaining people. She got that talent that other people might not have. A less educational background is not an obstacle in achieving dreams.

In future plans, she might taking English class to improve her English and people around also will be inspired to learn or improved English by taking English class. Valentina one day could be a successful singer if she continuously working hard and never give up and I’m sure people around her will give her full support. Soon, there might somebody will try to do the same thing like she did and perhaps one day she might produce an English album.

Valentine Hassan is a good example for some people who feel awkward or afraid in learning English. We can learn English in many ways for instance; we can learn English by singing, watching movies or other ways that we feel comfortable with, not just only attending English classes for some time. Some people they are fluent in English because of frequently singing English songs. It is true that we can not conquer the language in a short time, we need more time and perhaps we need years to be fluent in English. It does not matters what language is, but time is important in earning the language. Besides, we have to be strong and can not easily give up in learning language and also give a full commitment in the learning process.

Therefore, do not be afraid in learning language specifically English language because there are many alternatives ways that can help us and do not afraid in making mistakes because there are no body is perfect and mistakes make us become more matured and prepared. Besides, English language is demanding nowadays, so we can not be left behind. So, chayok..chayok!

METHODS APPROACHES OF TRANSLATION

TRANSLATION

Translation is the changing of a language to convey the message or intention of the “speaker” or original product of message that sent in an “oral” and visual form. Translation can be divided into two which are translation in semantic (meaning) and translation in communicative (oral). Translation is semantic express text or express thought, ideas, opinons and feelings in the form of essay, articles, lyrics, poems or movies. Semantic brings informal meaning because it's express something. Communicative on the other hand, is an infomative and vocative texts where it's requires higher knowledge and it brings formal meaning. Formal and informal is the characteristic that diffrentiate semantic and communicative.

There are many methods in translation which are borrowing translation, transference translation, calque translation, oblique translation, transposition translation, modulation translation, equivalence translation, adaptation translation and literal translation.

LITERAL TRANSLATION

Literal translation is a translation that follows closely the form of source language. It is a translation of text from one language to another “word-for-word”, rather than giving the sense of the original. It is also known as word-for-word translation or direct translation. According to some reference, literal translation is a word-for-word translation which often makes no sense when read. It is because the language is translated by totally following the original words without any changes. The literal translation is not really care about the grammatical functions. The words are translated according the original word order. That is the reason why some of the translation makes no sense when read.

For example, Tarmizi membasuh kereta baru that is the source language. The sentence will be translated Tarmizi washed car new that is the target language. the sentences are translated word by word.

Many translators suggest that literal translation is the safest way because the words are translated one by one. One purpose introducing literal translation is to provide amplified translation so that readers can understand the text. Literal translations also function as translating a long, precisely warded legal definition of an invention patent.

In conclusion, literal translation is one of the methods approaches of translation that follows closely the form of source language. It is a translation of word by word.
